General Electric X500

Sometimes you really do get what you pay for – as this £100 superzoom illustrates all too well.

Inexpensive but well-featured, Flexible 15x optical zoom, Full manual controls

Poor overall performance, Shutter lag and slow AF, Inconsistent metering and poor image quality

General Electric X500

The General Electric X500 doesn't excel in performance, but it aces value, packing a big 15x zoom lens into a $150 camera.

Inexpensive. 15x zoom lens. Electronic viewfinder. Pop-up flash. Some manual controls. Simple to use.

Mediocre image quality. Dismal low-light performance. Slow.

GE Power Pro review

Editors' note: Several of the design, features, and shooting options are identical between the GE Power Pro X500 and the

The GE Power Pro X500 offers a lot for its low price including a 15x wide-angle zoom lens and semimanual and manual controls.

The X500's shooting performance is really slow and it's not good indoors without a flash and in low-light conditions.

The GE X500 megazoom is a very good value as long as you understand its photo and performance limitations.

General Electric X500

We've reviewed a number of superzoom digital camera in the last few months, all with two things in common: They have long zoom lenses, and they're all at least $300. General Electric takes a different tack with the 16-megapixel General Electric X500,...

GE Power Pro X500 Digital Camera

While the much less expensive GE Power Pro X500 is technically a high zoom camera, its 15x optical zoom doesn't go nearly as high as competing models. It's also large and heavy, and felt poorly built. You won't be able to take lots of pictures in quick...

GE X500

Die GE X500 ist eine große Kompaktkamera mit starkem Zoom und Sucher. Klobig und schwer (489 g). Insgesamt nur mäßig. Pluspunkt: Sie kann gute Bilder machen, auch bei wenig Licht. Gute Farbwiedergabe. Geringe Auflösung. Sehr großer Zoombereich: für...

Don't walk away from this, RUN!!!!

Me being in possession of this camera wasn't really my choice. I got this camera as a Christmas gift many years ago to replace a Sony Cybershot 3.2 megapixel point an shoot that got stolen from me.

In the short term it's a very inexpensive digital camera to take pictures.

You get what you pay for.

"Just purchased my 4th one and they are great!"

I have purchased the full GE line it seems. First an X400, then and X5 (and the AGFA twin, the Selecta 14) and now the X500. Soon, I hope to buy an X2600, which seems to have new plastic, probably a few new features and a longer mega zoom 26X lense. I...

Very long AA battery life (especially when compared to other Digital point and shoot units) that need a special battery.

ONLY a 15X optical Zoom. Many cameras now offer 40X or more. If you really NEED more, you ARE looking for a Digital SLR.

Very long AA battery life (especially when compared to other Digital point and shoot units) that need a special battery. A wide rang of photo options available and a decent photo program on disc. Great quality pics either printed or on the computer.

ONLY a 15X optical Zoom. Many cameras now offer 40X or more. If you really NEED more, you ARE looking for a Digital SLR. I had to find a nit to pick, it would be that it is not usable as a webcam connected to a computer. IS that REALLY a problem?

Great Camera for cheaper price!

Best camera on its price range. If you're a beginner and looking for a non-DSLR camera, GE x5/x500 will be great for you. I must admit, image quality is not that good especially in low-light areas but using some software, you can enhance the color of...

- very good camera for its price - good image quality even in maximum optical zoom - good in macro shots - video quality is good although it's not HD - small and light weight - excellent for beginners!

- sometimes it's hard to focus even in well-lit areas - aperture must be adjusted to 8 and up. - sometimes, the image on the LCD looks good but if you view it on a computer, you will see the noise and the low image quality.
