Altec Lansing IMV712

When an iPod speaker dock costs $350, the consumer should expect something pretty spectacular. It should sound awesome, look nice, be easy to operate, and hopefully have some cool extra features. How does Altec Lansing's new iMV712 measure up? Well, it...

8.5-inch screen. Sleek design. Easy to use. S-Video output for TVs. Works with camcorders

So-so speaker quality. Cheap remote. No audio outputs

Maybe there's a need for an iPod dock with a screen, but the speakers on the iMV712 from Altec Lansing didn't blow me away, and the price seems way too high.

Altec Lansing's iMV712 iPod dock has a big screen and can sound quite loud, but it's of questionable use.

Review: Altec Lansing inMotion iMV712

Altec Lansing's inMotion iMV712 is an odd duck. It's an iPod “entertainment system” — a boombox with a built-in 8.5-inch video screen. But it doesn't...

Good room-filling sound with a rumbly bass and clear midtones. The widescreen display shows off Pirates of the Caribbean in all its epic glory

Distorts when cranked to 11. Screen is a bit fuzzy. When docked, iPod has no physical support other than its universal connector. Screen doesn’t display the iPod menu, which would save squinting when using the remote from across the room

Altec Lansing InMotion iMV712 video speakers

The Altec Lansing inMotion iMV712 mini home theater system features a built-in 8.5-inch LCD screen for viewing iPod videos; sound quality is quite decent in small rooms and the system plays loud; connectivity options include a line-in jack, a composite...

Fairly pricey; limited aspect ratio control; screen size still too small to be seen from a distance; strains to fill larger rooms with sound; the logos on the face are little too big and distracting; no AM/FM radio.

While it's hard to say where Altec Lansing's iMV712 mini home theater for the iPod fits into the home, it does up the ante for iPod speaker systems.

Altec Lansing inMotion iMV712 Review

One of the things I most enjoy about buying a new product is the feeling you get when unwrapping and holding your shiny, new gadget. An even greater feeling is experienced later on down the road when you buy your gadget, and the now sullen, less shiny...

High-resolution LCD ; Composite Input ; iPod Navigating Remote ; S-Video Output ; Dynamic-range

Non-adjustable LCD ; Distortion When Played Loudly ; Unprotected iPod Dock

Well, the good news is that my iPod and I are speaking to each other again. It turns out that the Altec Lansing inMotion iMV712 was exactly what we needed, and more. The 8.5” high-definition LCD was a great addition and provided clear, crisp and smooth...

Review: Altec Lansing's inMotion iMV712 iPod Video entertainment system

One question continued to arise as I was testing Altec Lansing's inMotion iMV712 mini home theater system: what exactly is it? Is it another iPod boombox, this time with a video screen? Or is it a high-end home audio/video system? Would I listen to it...
