When PC Mag says that a product should top our shopping list, we take the recommendation seriously, so their recent review of the HP Digital Entertainment Center z556 Media Center PC should be helpful to anyone looking for a Windows MCE solution....

This latest system, like the z555, comes with a 3.0-GHz Pentium 4 640 processor, a 250GB hard drive, nVidia GeForce 6600 graphics, 512MB of memory, and a dual-layer DVD burner with LightScribe, the company's technology for burning labels on discs. HP...
One HDTV and two SDTV tuners. Horizontal A/V-component-style shape. Quiet. HP Personal Media drives. Wireless networking. Wireless keyboard with trackball mouse. Plentiful input/output ports. Costs $500 less than its predecessor
ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) HDTV tuner works only with over-the-air broadcasts, not satellite or cable HDTV. Only 60-day Norton Internet Security subscription
The HP Digital Entertainment Center z556 is cheaper than its predecessor, the z555 and includes Windows Media Center Update Rollout 2, which improves the Media Center experience. The system remains the standard for home-theater-friendly Media Center PCs.

I’m a big believer in the media-center PC concept, and HP has done a lot to promote it. The z556 has much to recommend it, including a gorgeous picture (with a compatible display), excellent EPG, expandable hard-disk storage, and a well-designed menu.

Introduction Behind HDTV, "convergence" is one of the most bandied-about buzzwords in the consumer electronics industry. Companies large and small have deluged the market with products designed to meld the PC and A/V environments, from tuner cards that...
