The Ricoh GR is a fine camera with an APS-C sensor and prime lens, with some drawbacks. Unfortunately, its closest competitor, the Coolpix A from Nikon, puts up a stronger showing.
As much as we like to save money, the Coolpix A is a better overall camera than the Ricoh GR. The Nikon’s images are sharper and colors more accurate. The fact the Coolpix has built-in image stabilization while the GR does not is definitely a factor....

If you have £600 to spend on a compact, spend it on this.
Impressive shot to shot times ; A good level of sharpness throughout the frame ; Lightweight yet robust body ; Impressive AF system
Metering system a touch too sensitive ; AWB can at times be a touch too warm ; Harsh noise reduction on JPEG files ; Video quality a letdown
The Ricoh GR is the first model to display the influence of the relationship with Pentax with the presence of a Time-Aperture Value (TAv) setting common to Pentax cameras. It allows you to adjust the aperture and shutter speed desired and then selects...

With the launch of the Nikon Coolpix A we marvelled at how, in the space of a year, the idea of a large sensor compact with a fixed, prime lens, has gone from being an obscure niche (as it was when Sigma launched the original DP1) to a burgeoning and...
Excellent image quality in Raw, very good in JPEG ; Sharp lens with consistency at wide apertures and close working distances ; Large sensor in genuinely small body ; Highly customizable and responsive user interface ; Excellent build quality ;...
Occasional tendency to under-exposure ; Unflattering color profile embedded in DNG files ; Extremely limited movie capabilities ; Lack of external charger makes keeping a second battery charged awkward ; Limited buffer for continuous Raw shooting
DSLR image quality finally comes to Ricoh's well-respected enthusiast compact. The GR retains its predecessor's excellent and customizable user interface, making it a pleasure to use as a pocketable wide-angle photographers' camera. The JPEGs are...

Ricoh joins the APS-C format compact party
Large maximum aperture ; Quick and easy to use ; Great customisation options ; Sharp, high-quality images
Macro focusing isn't automatic ; No viewfinder included ; No touchscreen ; LCD can be hard to see at awkward angles
Ricoh had a reputation for producing superb 35mm film compact cameras such as the GR I and GR21 that found favour with enthusiast photographers. However, despite producing high quality images, the company's digital compact cameras such as the Ricoh GR...

The Ricoh GR fixed, wide-lens, large-sensor compact is one of those rare cameras that does just about everything right.

Ricoh consolidates all its prosumer eggs into one basket with an $800 APS-C compact, the Ricoh GR, taking aim at competitors that cost well over $1,000.

Announced almost a year ago - and rumored for a long time before - the GR Digital was always going to be something of a niche product. Described as a 'professional grade high resolution compact' the GR Digital echoes the design and ethos of the popular...
Good lens, very low distortion and without any real corner softness Fast F2.4 maximum aperture Subtle, natural-looking processing Dual control dials and customizable interface Unrivalled user interface for manual controls and overrides Program shift...
High noise levels at all ISO settings, noise visible even at ISO 64 JPEG output soft, lacking biting detail Mild auto exposure and white balance issues Camera, add-on lens and finder are expensive Screen can be hard to see in very bright light, meaning...
The GR digital is one of those cameras you have to use - and use 'properly' to really appreciate. It has without a doubt the best control system of any compact digital camera on the market today for those who like to set their own apertures, shutter...

The Ricoh GR is a compact, high performance, fixed-lens digicam with a 16-megapixel APS-C sized CMOS image sensor that has been designed without an optical low-pass filter for optimum resolution and color accuracy. With an f/2.8 maximum aperture, this...

There are high-end compact cameras and there are high-end compact cameras. The Ricoh GR most definitely fits into the latter group: there's an APS-C size sensor - the same size as found in many DSLR cameras - paired up with a fixed 28mm equivalent...
Image quality is exceptional, super-sharp lens, well priced considering the competition, plenty of customisation options, f/2.8 aperture, built-in ND filter (also works in auto), converter lenses and hotshoe for optical finder/accessories
Autofocus can be hit and miss, autofocus in low-light hunts to excess, battery life isn't good enough, no tilt-angle screen rules out waist-level work, limited buffer capacity for burst shooting, clunky manual focus
If you've been stroking your chin about buying a fixed focal length compact camera with a large sensor then we're not surprised: the choices in this niche market are limited, while each available option has its limitations. Fortunately the Ricoh GR...

With excellent image quality and tons of extra features, this camera proves that you can shoot big without a zoom lens.
Sturdy, light, magnesium alloy body ; 16.2 MP APS-C sensor in a super compact body ; Excellent image quality ; A plethora of enthusiast features ; Excellent menu system and physical controls ; Handsome 1,230,000 dot LCD ; Excellent Raw files with...
Separate battery charger sold separately; must otherwise plug in camera to charge ; Movie recording options more basic than functions for still photography ; No built-in Wi-Fi ; No image stabilization ; JPEGs not as snappy and colorful as the Raw...
The Ricoh GR is designed for enthusiast photographers who can appreciate its quality, design, image quality, and impressive array of functions. At $800, it costs hundreds less than rivals such as the Fujifilm X100S and Nikon Coolpix A, yet compares...
